My friend Jack is a Master Wood-crafter. One day while we were discussing his previous work, I asked him if he would consider designing a few pieces directly related to working with or displaying orchids. He came up with a few beauties for display purposes. Simple, elegant forms, that I love and will be up here eventually.
This piece, however, he designed specifically to be my work horse and instantly it became my right hand man. It's a portable work bench with two shelves, the entire piece is made of solid red oak. You can use it in the greenhouse, in the garden, as a bench, or wherever you think it would make life easiest. I also use it as a display table when I teach about orchids, show different varieties, and it also handy when I'm tending clients greenhouses.
The measurements are as follows: Overall - 12W x 23T x 25L - perfectly proportioned for portability, room to sit with a beverage and a snack. Top shelf - 10" bottom shelf - 6" There is no metal hardware on it. It's all mortis and tenon (says Jack - I had to look that up) What i means is, the joints are all fitted together, so there's no need for screws or nails. There won't be any rust or hardware replacement, ever. This is all done with calculation and exceptional workmanship. The entire piece comes apart by removing the pegs on either side (see pictures). Simple.
Now, I do have potting tables, and I have a large workspace, but, I have had a tendency to put off my maintenance because the idea of taking the plants from the greenhouse, cleaning them up, dividing them, re-potting them and then taking them back to the greenhouse is a daunting task. We're all familiar with the routine, why not take the grunt work out of it?
Since Jack made this for me, life is easier. I can lift this right onto any table, it fits over the trays and plants so I'm not harming anything, I place it exactly where I need to work, and I get going. All of my tools are where I need them, the orchids are right in front of me and before I know it, I'm on to the next lot.
I have gifted a couple of these to friends, and they're as happy with it as I am. It's nice looking, strong, durable and let's face it, anything that makes the tending quick and easy, so we can sit and smell the flowers, is worth having.
When I'm done, I can place it on the floor so I can sit and enjoy the quiet and peace of the greenhouse and enjoy the fragrance and colors of the orchids I love. Perfect as a gift but I recommend having your own, you'll be very happy you own one. I definitely am.
